Spring Clean Your Health
Jan 02, 2023Spring has finally arrived! As seasons change, so do our bodies and lives. It’s important to help your body transition slowly into this new way of life. I like to begin each spring by resetting my body and life so that I am well equipped with the healthy habits I need to carry me forward through the rest of the season. Here are some of the things that I will be doing to spring clean my health:
Hydration
Adequate hydration is crucial to flush toxins from the body. I make sure to drink 8-10 cups of water every day.
Bonus Points - add 1/2 lemon to your water each day. The juice detoxifies the liver and cleanses the digestive tract.
Reducing consumption of sugar and processed foods - THIS IS KEY
During the dark and cold months of winter, we may crave sugar and comfort foods more often. As we move into warmer and brighter days, let’s make an effort to reduce our consumption of these foods and instead consume more whole foods. Eating refined sugar increases stress hormone cortisol. It also leads to a vicous cycle of cravings that are hard to stop!
Eating more vegetables - specifically dark greens and dandelion
Springtime marks the beginning of the growing season. YAY! I am going to take advantage of this abundance and fill my diet with as many vegetables as I can! This is also a great way to swap out some of the processed foods with healthier springtime fruits and vegetables. Try to snack on more dark veggie through the day. Try to have at least 1 salad per day. Eating dandelion greens is a great ritual to obtain the nutrients of spring!
Exercise - MOVE YOUR BODY!
Now that it’s getting warmer, I am craving some outdoor activity! I plan on taking my workouts outside to enjoy the sunshine. I also plan on going for more walks, bike rides and hikes. Movement helps to flush out toxins. It also improves mood, which will help us make choices with food that are aligned with our goals. I recommend moving daily for at least 20 mins. BONUS POINTS - get outside!
Self Compassion.
It is only when we take care of our needs that we can show up for the people around us. This spring, I am going to prioritize my self-care habits such as meditating, sleeping well, moving, eating healthy and spending quality time with my loved ones.
